Seated in the backseat of a gold Maybach with the words Prophet splayed on the license plate, Nine spoke to her most loyal lieutenant whom she named Antonius. His born name was Ian Greiner but as with all of the men in her Legion, she gave him a Roman name fitting of their union with her organization.
He and the nobles were the only members in The Legion who were aware that the Prophets were incestuous people.
“I thought I lost her,” Antonius said as he melted into the leather seat while staring out of the window as his daughter was being placed in the back of a black Mercedes truck against her will. He hadn’t seen or heard from her in weeks and now she would be taken home.
Now she was safe.
He looked at Nine. “And once again you came through for me.” He stroked his smooth goatee that decorated his dark skin. He was stunning.
Nine gazed outside at Mo Wright’s body, which was being placed in the back of a van with no windows. When the corpse was inside she focused back on her most trusted soldier. “We are family, Antonius. You claim you know this but then you thank me for frivolous things. I reward loyalty with loyalty. So why would I not make time for you? Make time to find your daughter when it is clear that her absence troubled you?”
He chuckled. “How do you do that?”
“Do what?”
“Make everyone in your camp feel as if they’re the only one?”
She exhaled. “If you lived the life I have, beneath the floors, then you would truly see that every person, every experience, no matter how wretched, is still precious. I have a violent way about me, Antonius, and I cannot deny it. But I revere every moment as if it would be my last.”
She touched his thigh innocently but that didn’t stop his manhood from stiffening with lust. There was something about a powerful woman that drove him mad and yet he realized he could never possess her.
Not in the way he wanted anyway.
“What can I do to repay you?”
She exhaled, overwhelmed by all of her unresolved issues. “Actually I have two things.” She remembered the smug look on Alice’s face over her aunt’s house. “My cousin Alice is untrustworthy and I might want her slayed.”
“Just say the word.”
“Give me some days. I need to be around my family when the murder happens so that they will not suspect me.” She giggled to herself. “Even though with the power I possess I could be dead and still be capable of murder.”
He laughed. “Anything else?”
“Yes,” she said growing serious. “I got word that one of our own has been failing in the math classes. He does not see the need for the education part of my operation and yet I cannot dismiss him. If I do I am afraid I will lose him to the streets.”
“Maybe you should, Nine. You can’t change or help everybody.”
“If I truly believed that then I would not be here in front of you now.
